It is with deep regret and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our President, Lifetime Member, past Fire Chief and Township Fire Chief James “Bummy” Bumgardner. Bummy passed away at his house surrounded by his family, after nearly a year long battle with cancer, on the evening of September 14th, 2011. Bummy began his fire service career at the City Hook & Ladder in Lewistown, Pa where he achieved the rank of Station Captain. In 1976 he was hired in the City of Harrisburg as a career firefighter. He moved his family to the Summerdale area shortly after his appointment. In 1977 Bummy became a member of the Summerdale Fire Co. and attained the rank of 1st Assistant Chief for 3 years and Chief for 14 yrs. He also served as Fire Company President for the 5 yrs preceding his passing. In 1979 he was appointed East Pennsboro Township Fire Chief by the Board of Commissioners. Bummy held this leadership position for 32 years as a dedicated public servant. He was a driving force in the recent merger between Citizens Fire Company No.1 of Enola and Summerdale Fire Company into the Northeast Fire & Rescue Company.

Pennsylvania’s First Fire Commissioner was 84 Harrisburg – Pennsylvania State Fire Commissioner Ed Mann today announced the death of the state’s first Fire Commissioner Charles “Chet” Henry, of Lemoyne, Cumberland County. Henry died June 25 at age 84. He was appointed State Fire Commissioner by Governor Milton J. Shapp in 1977 and served in that capacity through 1989. Prior to that appointment, he served as fire chief in the City of Harrisburg. “Chet was a dedicated public servant who spent much of his life serving others, in both the military and the fire service,” Mann said. “The firefighting community in Pennsylvania is stronger today thanks to his contributions. Firefighters across the state feel his loss.” Mann said much of the organization and responsibility of today’s Office of the State Fire Commissioner, or OSFC, is the result of Henry’s leadership and vision. Governor Dick Thornburgh supported Henry’s ideas and moved operational responsibility for the State Fire Academy and oversight of the Volunteer Loan Assistance Program to OSFC. In addition, Henry’s passion for fire prevention and safety changed the culture of homeowners and businesses across the state and gained him admiration and respect nationwide. Henry is survived by his wife, Sandra, and numerous siblings, nieces and nephews.
