KCFSI Cumberland County Member Passing

It is with deep regret and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our President, Lifetime Member, past Fire Chief and Township Fire Chief James “Bummy” Bumgardner.  Bummy passed away at his house surrounded by his family, after nearly a year long battle with cancer, on the evening of September 14th, 2011.  Bummy began his fire service career at the City Hook & Ladder in Lewistown, Pa where he achieved the rank of Station Captain.  In 1976 he was hired in the City of Harrisburg as a career firefighter. He moved his family to the Summerdale area shortly after his appointment.  In 1977 Bummy became a member of the Summerdale Fire Co. and attained the rank of 1st Assistant Chief for 3 years and Chief for 14 yrs.  He also served as Fire Company President for the 5 yrs preceding his passing.  In 1979 he was appointed East Pennsboro Township Fire Chief by the Board of Commissioners. Bummy held this leadership position for 32 years as a dedicated public servant.  He was a driving force in the recent merger between Citizens Fire Company No.1 of Enola and Summerdale Fire Company into the Northeast Fire & Rescue Company. Bummy was also a PA State Certified Fire Instructor and 2009 Member of the KCFSI.
